Choosing Your Furniture Wisely
Shabby Chic Style

I am ALL about using great antique furniture salvaged items and flea market finds to create the coolest decorating style ever for your home. But NOT when it comes to choosing the pieces that you sit on and sleep on everyday! This is one of the very few rules of SMART Shabby Chic home decorating.

PIECES THAT ARE BEST BOUGHT BRAND NEW: Your basic pieces of any room, for example, your bed frame and mattresses in a bedroom and your sofa and chairs in a living room must NOT be vintage. Please buy these pieces in brand new condition.

Vintage furniture is gorgeous, I have alot of it, but I don't lounge around on it! It is not built to withstand weight and long term wear and tear. Plus, especially if you find antique pieces in great condition, you want to preserve them in the condition that they are in now. If you have a vintage sofa or chair, display them in areas that people wouldn't spend much time sitting. Or use them as open storage units, or as a base for a display of other vintage items.

VINTAGE PIECES THAT ARE GREAT FOR LIGHT USE: Antique furniture such as wooden chairs, accent tables, telephone tables, humidors, dressers, mirrors and nightstands are fine to use as everyday accessories. Simply protect the surfaces from spills as you would any other piece. Also great to use are old dining room pieces such as table sets, china cabinets, serving buffets and kitchen dinettes. I have a vintage 1950's bright red rectangular table in my breakfast nook. You know the ones with chrome legs and formica tops? I happen to have an original, but the reproductions look really authentic! Being that my kitchen is done retro vintage style, it fits perfectly! My chairs, though, are all newer, mismatched and all styled around the 1950's era (yes, some are reproductions!).

Feel free to click through to my other pages that expand on this topic and break down even further into specific pieces. Over the years, I have found great online merchants that offer antique furniture and reproductions at great prices. Use my knowledge and expertise to your advantage. All of the research is done for you, I have nothing to hide, that's the point of this website!
